When to Consider Genetic Testing
Consider referral for genetic evaluation when your patient presents with any of the following clinical red flags:
Suggestive History
- Family history of same or related condition
- Consanguinity
- Multiple affected family members
- Early-onset presentation
Clinical Presentation
- Multi-system involvement
- Treatment resistance or unusual drug reactions
- Dysmorphic features or congenital anomalies
- Progressive or degenerative course
Diagnostic Impasse
- Failed prior diagnostic workup
- Multiple specialist evaluations without diagnosis
- Confirmation of suspected clinical diagnosis
- Unexplained developmental delay or regression
Critical Care
- Critically ill neonate with suspected genetic etiology
- NICU/PICU patient with unclear diagnosis

- Management decisions pending diagnosis
Testing Catalog & Turnaround Times
| Test Type | Description | Turnaround | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gene Panel | Targeted analysis of genes associated with specific conditions | 2–4 weeks | Clear phenotype, specific condition suspected |
| Exome Sequencing | All protein-coding regions (~20,000 genes) | 4–8 weeks | Broad differential, undiagnosed condition |
| Genome Sequencing | Complete genome including non-coding regions | 6–10 weeks | Structural variants, negative exome follow-up |
| Rapid Exome/Genome | Expedited sequencing for critical care settings | 3–7 days | NICU/PICU, management-dependent diagnosis |
| Pharmacogenomics Panel | Drug metabolism and response profiling | 1–2 weeks | Medication optimization, adverse event prevention |
